How do camcorders take still pictures?
Camcorders that can take digital still pictures can be handy for those times when you only want to carry one device with you. So, how do they work?

Most newer models use a memory card to store photos, just like a regular digital camera. Some less expensive or older models store images on tape. The photos from tape aren't as high quality as those stored on memory cards.

If you want to take digital stills with your camcorder, look for a model that stores them on a removable memory card. Secure Digital (SD) cards are common among both video and still cameras, so you can use the card later if you invest in a digital still camera down the road.

Keep in mind that the photos from a camcorder won't be quite as good as those from even a moderately priced dedicated still camera. If you plan to do a lot of still photography, you'll want to upgrade to a dedicated camera at some point for best possible quality. Don't buy a camcorder based on its ability to take still pictures. The quality just won't be there.
