Do stereo microphones on camcorders really work?
Many newer camcorders come equipped with stereo microphones. Do they really make a difference?

Most stereo mic elements on compact camcorders don't offer a great deal of audio separation. Your audio source usually needs to be quite close and to the extreme right of left of the camera to really take advantage of the stereo mic.

The stereo mics do work to a certain point, just don't expect theater-quality sound from them. Most of your audio will fill both the left and right speakers equally, with very little separation.

If you want to record good stereo audio, separate external microphones are a must. The microphones on camcorders tend to do a poor job of capturing good audio.
