Do cable companies offer digital video recorders (DVRs)?
In addition to standalone DVRs that can be purchased separately, many cable companies offer the option of their own DVR. Unlike standalone models, these units not only include a DVR, but also digital cable box. Some units even record HDTV. Most units have more than one tuner, so they beat standalone units in that respect. In addition, renting a DVR from the cable company can usually be cheaper than purchasing a standalone DVR and service.

Cable DVR rentals usually add $5 - $10 to your monthly service fee. In the case of HD units, this usually includes the HDTV programming package.

While not all cable companies offer DVRs, many of the ones that don't are planning to in the future. If your provider doesn't offer one, they may soon.
