How many fans do I need?
Generally, your power supply and processor will have cooling fans to keep them from overheating. Many graphics cards also have them. For most older or budget systems, this is probably enough.

For today's power systems, you should consider at least one addition case fan to pull air through the case. If you only add one, be sure it draws air in. This will create positive airflow into the case which will help keep dust from clogging the various air vents. Air will actually blow out of the holes spaced around the case.

If you choose to add a second case fan, use it to exhaust air out of the case. One fan should be at the front of the case drawing air in and the other should be at the rear blowing air out. This will allow cooler room air to flow past the drives before it picks up the hot air from the processor on its way out. In addtion, by blowing air out the back, the fan noise will be reduced.
