How do I install a Printer?
Windows XP makes installing hardware easy, and printers are no exeption. Whether you are installing a parallel port or USB model, the computer should detect it automatically. Plugging it into the computer and electrical outlet then turning it on should trigger the installation wizard. Just follow the instructions for each step.

Some printers do come with special interface software. If you wish to use it, make sure install it before plugging in the printer. This way, Windows will detect the specialized driver and software and use it instead of those built into the system. In addition, some printers may require the use of the manufacturer drivers. If the automatic Windows install doesn't work, unplug the printer from the computer, install the driver off the printer disc and try plugging it in again.

For older parallel port printers, you'll most likely need to install the printer driver. Do this before plugging the printer into the computer.
