Is it possible for me to access and/or control my computer when I am away from home?
Normally, a properly networked computer is protected by a firewall from being accessed via the Internet. However, there is a way to securely access you files when outside your home.

Programs like "Go To My PC" allow you to create a secured, direct connection to a home system from work or on the road. These systems use a server and client software pair to make sure only computers that have been given permission can access files.

One thing to consider is whether you can actually install the software on the remote computer you wish to use to access your home system. If it's your own computer, it's not a problem. However, some business computers don't allow people to install software on them. Without the client software, you can't connect. In addition, you would never want to use this type of solution on a public system, such as at a library where other people can use the computer.
